It's time to let you know who the winners are from the Quiltmaker's 100 Block Blog Tour.

Image008

First of all, I can't apologize enough for the commenting nightmare!  Those of you who were persistent....thank you!!!!!

So that you can see how I ended up handling the situation, here are some pictures.

Whenever a comment came into my email (and Monday's comments) I wrote the name in a notebook and then ended up cutting all the names apart (did you catch the mention of a nightmare earlier?? )   Certainly not hard...just a pain.

Image011

I pulled three names.  The first being the person who won a magazine from Quiltmaker's.  The next two winners were for prizes from me.

Image012

So, drum roll please....

Quiltmaker's 100 Block edition:     Beth Sanders

New Leaf Stitches (Clearly Perfect Angles and 2 patterns):

       Robin

       Janet Rushant

I will need shipping information from all three of you as soon as you can.  Just email me at  kari @newleafstitches.com

Because of the fiasco,  I've decided to extend the special pricing on the Clearly Perfect Angles.  Clicking on the picture below will take you to the website that has not only ordering information, but the videos and testimonials about the product.

And don't forget about the free pattern for Blooming Bias Baskets!  Here's a hint....since all the blocks in the magazine are the same size, use the borders with one of your other favorite blocks!!  Again, clicking on the picture will take you to the free pattern.

I noticed that there were quite a few of you who are bloggers yourselves.  My new book with Martingale, Twice as Nice,  will be coming out later this year.  If you would be interested in being a participant in a blog hop announcing the book's release, please email me.   I know that there's a free book involved!!!

Now, totally changing the topic...I have never, nor do I hope to ever have to do this again, but I need to share with you my total frustration and disappointment with Posterous.  Between Jesse (my website guru) and myself, we contacted them at least 5 times to try to figure out what was going on...to date...we have not heard one  word from them.  Please be warned that if you are thinking about having a  blog with them you will  have issues with no  apparent customer service.  It seems  they have gone to the birds since Twitter acquired them...

Word Press...here I come!!

All my best,

Kari

Welcome to the first day of the Quiltmaker's  100 Blocks Blog Tour!!

Image005

I am so happy and pleased to not only have a block in this edition, but to take part in the blog tour.  I hope that you will enjoy my block, Blooming Bias Baskets  and the free pattern for a table topper.

Image007

For those of you that are familiar with my designs, you know that I enjoy adding some dimension to my quilts.  The baskets are simply a square that has been folded in half on the diagonal and then, once two sides are stitched into the seam, the folded edge is pressed back to form a scallop.  I also enjoy wool applique because the fabric is so forgiving and is always rich looking.  If you don't want to use wool,  you certainly can use cotton!

Below are some pictures I snapped during the design process that I thought you might be interested in.  The first one is showing a variety of fabrics that I had pulled from my stash along with some applique (basic) ideas.

Image008

Once I decided on the fabrics I started to play around with ideas for the applique.  I even contemplated using some narrow rick-rack for a basket handle, but decided against it because the block, when divided into fourths, was too small.

Image010

Did you notice how I started with the background fabric larger and chalked the area that I had to work with?  I trimmed it down after I had the appliquing done.

Image011

I felt honored when I was asked to make a quilt using my submitted block.  You will find the quilt in the magazine (and below).   I really liked the basketweave fabric and wanted to include that into a border.   I hope you agree the ribbon border is just the right amount of color and style to set off the center block.

Image013

Printable instructions can be found by following this link:  Blooming Bias Baskets

Did you know there are several give-aways??  Make sure to leave a comment both on the Quiltmaker's blog page and below.  I will leave the comments open the entire blog tour and next week I will do my own drawing for several prize packages of a Clearly Perfect Angles and patterns!

Mon, 09 Apr 2012 12:26:00 -0700 Getting "Inked" http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/getting-inked http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/getting-inked

Sometimes things just happen in spurts.  Lately, New Leaf Stitches, and especially my book, Just around the Corner, have been getting some nice recognition in the media.  I hope it doesn't sound conceited, but it sure is fun to see your work being recongized, especially in places and by people you never dreamed of.

Below is the latest edition of Australian Patchwork and Quilting.  See what I mean?  Australia!!  They contacted me awhile back for information and I thought the article turned out really nice.  They are going to do a piece on the Clearly Perfect Angles in another one of their publications...wahoo!

And here is another that I was so please/shocked to discover.  Nancy Zieman wrote a book (it has been out awhile, but I just learned about it) featuring her 101 favorite notions...and the Clearly Perfect Angles is in it!!   Can I hear a...wahoo?!

Image004

On a side note...I will be presenting at Nancy's Quilt Expo in Madison, WI this fall...more details to follow.

Recently, The Applique Soceity featured the book in their newsletter along with an article.  Patti did an excellent job writing it...thank you.  And I discovered what a large and interesting group this is becaue I heard from many of them.  It is always fun to learn about people and especially about an organization dedicated to the art of quilting.  I truly think it would be worth your time to check out their website:  http://www.theappliquesociety.org or they have an 800 number for additional information:  800-597-9827.

I tried to leave this big enough so that if you are intereted you can read the whole article.

Image005

Image006

Image008

Patti (and her sister) where also guinea pigs and gave the Clearly Perfect Angles a whirl.  The review was so very sweet!

Image009

And talk about out of the blue...I'm in Minnesota and I get an article in the Grand Junction, CO paper.  Go figure!  I visited with Sherida, their Art of Quilting Columnis,t way back at fall market about Just around the CornerA couple weeks ago she sent me the article.  And another...wahoo!

Image013

So those things are in the past, and there are a couple more coming up in the future....

This one I have known about for awhile, but was asked to keep it hushed...I will have not only a quilt block, but a quilt in the upcoming issue of:

Make sure to look for the new edition that will be out shortly!!

Now here is a tease.  This fall I have a small wool, appliqué project that will be in Fons and Porter's, Love of Quilting.  I can't let you see the project, but I think it turned out dang cute and is simple, to boot!  One of the things I like best about it is the beautiful fabrics I used from Cherrywood Fabrics.  If you haven't seen (or touched) them, you really need to.  I will let you know more details about this when I can...For now, you're only left with a tiny peek.

Image019

Speaking of Fons and Porter's, don't forget to watch for the TV episode I taped with Mary Fons on your local PBS station.  It is called "Scrappy Stars" (episode 1912).  I haven't seen it on our local station, so I don't even know how it turned out....

What's on the horizon:

Next week I'm heading to New York state to spend some time at a couple of guilds.

The week after that I am in North Dakota.

May brings me to quilt market.

July I will be at the Iowa Quilt Guild retreat along with a visit to Altoona.

August I will be presenting in Minneapolis.

September I head to Madison, WI and Bloomington, IN.

            October is fall market.

November I get to teach at a retreat in Minnesota.

And just for good measure throw in...a new grandbaby, a new book, and... jury duty!

Thanks for checking in...I know...it's been awhile.

Please be patient with me!  Not getting a new blog posted has been niggling at me (I didn't even get a Christmas card sent this year, yikes!), but it's not like I haven't been busy........

The manuscript for my next book is due this week and let's just say, I've been burning the midnight oil.  The fun part, i.e. sewing, is done so this has been my view for the last, oh so many days.

Image005

Last week I had somebody feeling a little sorry for me, so he offered to cut apart some chained pieces.  Believe me, every little bit of help was welcome.

Image007

I'm feeling a little better about checking in with you, but I need to get back to the task at hand.  I promise, I'll write something a little more interesting in a few weeks.

Kari

Oh yeah, I should probably mention the name of my book.  It's published  by Martingale and is titled, "The Whole Quilt and Caboodle".  I hope you will like it!

Sat, 10 Dec 2011 09:18:00 -0800 Zoom, Zoom, Zoom http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/zoom-zoom-zoom http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/zoom-zoom-zoom

Zoom, zoom, zoom goes my sewing machine.  My January manuscript deadline has been slowly creeping up on me...but when I think about throwing in all the Christmas activities my stress level goes thru the roof.  Yikes, there's so much to get done.   So, here's a peek into what I've been doing.

First of all, check out the January/February issue of" Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting" magazine.  I have a fun quilt, called "Pansy Patch",  featured in the SEW Easy section.  Riley Blake Designs  generously provided the fabric for this project.  Thanks!

Image002

Talking about fabric, I am so impressed with this flannel fabric from Maywood.  The line is called "Woolies" and looks like, well... wool.  I had the hardest time deciding which color way I wanted use.  The book project is called, "Dear Sir:", so I ended up going with creams, blues and grays.  I can't wait to do this one.

Image003

The quilts I just finished piecing today use the yummy fabric from Blue Hill Fabrics I showed you in another post.  I'm really pleased with the projects.  I'm only showing a snippet...you'll have to wait for the book to come out to see everything!

Image004

I discovered that you can work and play at the same time.  Okay, truthfully, this was more play than work, but I had really good intentions.   Eight designers got together here in Minnesota for our very own retreat.  This is a group shot one night when we went out for dinner.

From left to right: Celine (Perkins Dry Goods), Lori (Allison Designs), Terri (Whimsicals), Gudrun (GE Designs), Susan K.(The Quilt Branch)  , Susan N. (Prairie Sky Quilting), me, and Susan M. (Suzn Quilts).

Image005

Gudrun is famous for her Chocolate Martinis.  Let's just say they were too good and what goes on at retreat stays at retreat. Sounds pretty salacious, doesn't it?  Really though....a bunch of quilt designers don't get too wild and crazy   :-)

Image006

Here are couple candid shots.  Susan M. and Celine always smiling.

Image007

My silly roommates, Terri and Gudrun.  What a hoot!

Image008

Here's more fun sewing news... I say "news" because this is my daughter-in-law cutting and sewing her very first dress.  She did a great job and it was fun having her show interest in sewing.  Maybe someday even a quilt?!?!?

Image009

And of course, a person can always use a little extra help....

Kendall helping me

Image010

and Grandpa.

Image011

My sewing machine has cooled and the iron is heated...back to work...zoom, zoom!

A whole box of Blue Hill Fabrics from the line, "Sarah's Stash".  I cannot wait to start this new book project!  Yum.

Image007

When I am at market I just can't get past the Dovo scissors booth.  I love, love, love their products. Okay, so I don't love them...but REALLY LIKE them!   I got these for different applique projects.

Image009

Just a little note that I will be running a Black Friday (well, really Friday thru Monday) Sale.

Fri, 04 Nov 2011 08:37:00 -0700 A Quick Market http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/a-quick-market http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/a-quick-market

It was a quick trip to market, but oh so fun!

Of course, it was a business trip, so let's start there...

I had the pleasure to teach a Take and Teach class sponsored by Martingale/That Patchwork Place.  It was a packed room!  Hopefully the shops will use their project for doing technique demonstrations for  the book, "Just around the Corner"!

Image003

I should also give a shout-out to Red Rooster who provided the fabric for the kits and Pfaff for providing the sewing machines...Thank you!!

With the class behind me I had the luxury (yes, luxury!) of walking the floor and just looking, and looking, and looking!  Talk about sensory overload.  I felt very good about finding new fabrics for my next book.  I can't wait to get my hands on them!!

The weather was just beautiful.  Karen and I took a little break on the patio outside the convention center.

Image010

Here are a few views of the park across the street from the convention center.

Image011

Image012

I was horrible about taking pictures this time.  I wish I had a group shot of a very fun and relaxing dinner with friends, Gudrun and Yvonne (GE Designs) and Terri and Tom (Whimsicals).  I'm afraid our laughter got a little loud....sorry fellow diners!

After one long day on our feet, Karen and I enjoyed a glass of wine while oogling an, oh so glorious impulse buy.  Would you believe it if I told you we went back for more the next day???

Image013

All in all...I'd say it was one of my best fall markets on many different fronts.  Totally recharged and inspired!

As I was strolling the aisles at market, my son and his wife were running a half-marathon.  This is mile 10...Don't they look fresh and happy?  I'm so in awe you guys did this and proud of your tenacity while training.

Tue, 18 Oct 2011 10:34:00 -0700 Priorities http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/priorities http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/priorities

Market is just a little over a week away and there are things to do!  BUT.... the whole family was home this weekend and it was so wonderful!  And guess what?  This post won't have anything to do with quilting.  I know, kind of unusual considering my business and time of year.  I just wanted to give you a glimpse at the fun we had this weekend and my priorities!

Of course, it pretty much revolved around our little granddaughter, Kendall.  Grandpa was definetly her favorite and she was his shadow all weekend.

Image005

Image007

I'm not sure how many books he read this weekend,  but she loooooves to read so there were plenty....Along with a few variations of the same  one.

Image010
Image012

"Swing. Swing."  "Wheee"  We heard that from the time she got up in the morning until it got dark out.  I like this picture because she had the giggles and I can still hear her.

Image020

I think this one is funny because Kendall put her arms around each of us (but notice who she wanted to have hold her).

She is not so sure about her Halloween costume, so Mom & Dad have been "practicing" with her being an elephant.

Image021

Image022

Here's Mom showing her how it's done (it got a little silly around here...I love it when everyone is laughing).

Image024

Grandpa was even having a hard time convincing her....

The boys thought it was a perfect weekend:  they went duck and goose hunting in the mornings, pheasant hunting one afternoon and walleye fishing the next.  Throw in a few football games and they claim it was Minnesota at its best.

Talking about the "best"...I made THE best apple crisp ever!  Sinful I'm tellin' ya!  Enjoy the recipe...

Image028

Preheat oven to 350°.

In a saucepan combine:

          1 C sugar

          1 C water

          1/2 tsp cinnamon

          1/2 tsp nutmeg

Boil until makes syrup (don't forget to stir it)

While making syrup, place cut apples in bottom of 9" x 13" pan (use as many as you want, but a pretty thick layer can handle the syrup).

Make topping

          2 C brown sugar

          1 1/2 C flour

          1 C oatmeal

          1 C butter - cut into above

Pour syrup over apples and then add topping.

Bake for about 45 minutes (may be more depending on the size of apples) or until apples are tender. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

As I am typing this, the name reminded me of a free pattern of mine called "Acorn Crisp".

If you like it,  go to this link for the instructions.

Image031

Whew,  I'm so glad I worked some quilting in here....

I'm hoping you all are enjoying your priorities!!

Tue, 27 Sep 2011 07:33:00 -0700 Iowa Basics....NOT! http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/iowa-basicsnot http://newleafstitches.posterous.com/iowa-basicsnot

When I was in grade school each year we had to take the Iowa Basics test.  Anyone else remember those?  Well, I have been to Iowa several times in the last couple weeks and there was nothing basic about it.  At least to me.

I was so honored to be the speaker at the Pella Guild's 25th anniversary banquet.  The theme was "Name that Tune".

Aren't the table decorations so very clever?

Image002

These are just a few of the many quilts that were entered in their challenge.  Wow!  Some very talented ladies belong to this guild.

Image004

There were many laughs and even some interesting, fun songs that were sung.

The next morning a group met at a beautiful church to work on my mystery class, "Our Town".

Image006

Once again, I was impressed with their abilities and how very welcoming and gracious they all were.  And the food...excellent.   Thank you Pella, for a wonderful time!!!

Image008

The next week was sooooo very far from normal. I flew into Des Moines to be a guest host on the PBS TV show, "Love of Quilting" with Mary Fons.

The first day I got to hang out at the studio.  Not only was I with Mary, but I got to visit with her mom, Marianne, the publisher and editors of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting magazine and all the talented people working on the show.

Here is a peek behind the scenes...

This is one of the first things you see on the set...the famous "tips table".

Image010

Look at all the cameras.  There were a total of 5...talk about intimidating.

Image012

Here sweetheart Nancy Mahoney was working on her segment with the stag manager, Cindy, and camera operators.

Image014
Image016

I found the control room really fascinating!

Here are just a couple shots from different angles.

Image018

Image020

You can see what is on the teleprompter if you look at the screen on the left side.

And look closely at this monitor!  My quilt, Fall's Finery, was a cover quilt a few years ago AND it has been on a poster on the set for quite awhile.  How fun!!

Image022

The next day it was my turn to tape a segment (you will just have to wait to see what it was about...stay tuned).  I was shown into a dressing room...just made me giggle....and no, there was no star on the door.

Image024

Peg is a wonderfully kind makeup lady.  She was always right there to make sure you didn't have any broccoli in your teeth or hair out of place.

Image026

I couldn't help but ask Marianne to take a picture on the set by the Fall's Finery poster.  She is so nice and...funny!  It was because of her stopping by my booth at market many years ago and encouraging me to submit a quilt to the magazine that New Leaf Stitches got off the ground.  Although I have never asked anyone for an autograph, I did ask her to sign the cover of the magazine.  Thank you Marianne for all you have done for the quilting industry!

Image028
Image030

Each night we were treated to a wonderful dinner.  As we were getting ready to leave the last night I realized I didn't have a picture with Mary so we quickly had this one snapped.  If you haven't seen Mary's show "Quilty", you need to.  I loved the energy of this beautiful, talented young woman.  Keep your eye on her!!

Image032

I was in Iowa so much you would think I was running for a political office... you can be sure that will never happen!

Now this is totally random, and has nothing to do with Iowa...

It was fun to look thru the new issue of "Quilt Sampler" and find a picture with my pillow, "Winter Blooms" in it.  I love it made up in the nautical colors!   Quilt Lover's Hangout is a fabulous quilt shop that has been so very good to me.  If you are ever in the Ft. Myers area it is a must-see shop.

Image034

Well, I better get back to work...the first project is due at the end of the week for my new book.

Thanks for stopping by.  Kari

Ya gotta love Roseann!  Thank you friend, for your nice post yesterday!

I've been so pleased with how the hop went this week.  I hope you all have had a good time.

Today I want to share a little more with you about the actual mitering technique used in "Just around the Corner".  Because I just found out that the video I did with Jodie from QNNtv.com at market is now on-line, I thought this would be a good time to send you over there to watch the segment.  You will catch on right away how the miter works!!

Image007

And since you are there, Jodie also did a nice job a year ago on the Clearly Perfect Angle.  This video, too, shows a complete over-view of how useful and user-friendly the CPA really is.

Now, don't forget that I too, am giving away a copy of "Just around the Corner" and the Clearly Perfect Angles!  Make sure you leave a comment in order to be eligible (and....you can still leave comments on the guest blogger's sites to try to win the copy they are giving away)!

MONDAY...winners announced...be sure to check in!

Since I asked everyone to share their favorite project in the book, I thought I should share mine, which is hard for me  :-)

So one of my favorites that no one has mentioned is "Medley Lane".  I think the miter and scallops really highlight this small, framed sampler quilt.  I also think this would be adorable in 30's reproduction fabrics!

Image011

I also like the Christmas topper called "A Caroling We Will Go".  I don't think the picture in the book does the wool appliqué justice and I like the small mitered borders used in each corner that gives it a unique shape.

Once you get your own copy, I would love to hear which project is your favorite!

I thought Sherri's little project was adorable. Thanks for sharing how you would incorporate the technique. It would also be cute using the two-colored scallop.  Lot's of options....

Today is the last day for the guest bloggers, but check in with me tomorrow as I have a few more things to share with you before the winners are announced on Monday!

Last, but certainly not least, is a spunky lady who has quickly become a dear friend.  Roseann, from Rosebud's Cottage.  She is a shop owner, designer, magazine writer, paper crafter, etc. etc.  You don't have to look very far to see her infuence and creativity...she seems to be everywhere lately!

Roseann is talking a little more about specific projects in the book. Make sure to visit her site to see what her take is.

AND don't forget to leave comments on all of our sites for your chance to win the book, "Just around the Corner" and a "Clearly Perfect Angles"!!

Welcome to day 4 of the book blog hop for "Just around the Corner".

I thought Heidi did an excellent job yesterday showing you how the mitering technique that is featured in the book works.  Really...it does turn out perfect everytime! And Really...thank you Heidi!!

We are scooting back to the west today for a visit with Sherri from "A Quilting Life".  Besides quilting, I've discovered that we have something else in common...boys and football!  Although mine are already done with college ball, I still remember those "big" games and all the joy that came with sports.  Sherri...it goes waaayyyy too fast!

Now that you know the basic technique for the mitered border, Sherri is going to tell you about all the varieties that can be done with the technique.  Use your imagination, mix and match...it's up to you!

Just a little reminder...leave comments each day if you want to be eligible for the drawings ("Just around the Corner" & "Clearly Perfect Angles)!!!!  The winners will be announced on Monday so you still have time to enter.

I just knew yesterday would be fun!  For those of you who didn't know, Pat survived both an earthquake and hurricane in one week!  I'm thinking she couldn't pick a favorite place in her neighborhood...she's just glad there's a corner to still go around!!  Thank you Pat for taking part in the hop!

Today finds us in Iowa...literally...I have the good fortune to be spending time in Pella (a "must see", quaint little town) with their guild.  Last night was a dinner celebrating their 25 year anniversary.  Today I get to spend the day teaching the mystery class, "Our Town".  So here is a quick shout-out to my new Pella friends!!

The book blog hop is also in Iowa today with Heidi Kaisand.  I met Heidi in person for the first time last fall when I had dinner with her.  I immediately felt a connection with this sweet, funny lady.  I'm not sure if it is our similar Midwest farm girl upbringing or quilting, but whatever it is, I count myself lucky to have met her.  Please follow Heidi on her blog and visit her web site,  Hen & Chicks Studio as she shares a little bit about her darling little family and her quilting adventures...including a new store and retreat center.

Remember!  Leave a comment to be eligible for the drawings!!

Thank you Darlene for writing a wonderful review of the book.  A big thank you is also sent to your readers for their comments.  It was a great way to start the week!  "Sidewalk Cafe" is also one of my favorites from the book.  I was so glad they choose that as the cover!

Now, let's go coast to coast and visit with Pat Sloan.  I had the good fortune to meet Pat a few years ago and we have also been in a couple blog hops together.  I don't have to tell you...she is one busy lady!  It is no surprise why she has such a loyal following...she is super talented on so many levels. If you haven't listened yet, be sure to tune into "American Patchwork & Quilting Radio", which is hosted by Pat.  She is so much fun!

Awhile ago Pat sent me some questions to answer about myself...please visit her blog to see what I had to say...and what Pat has added!

Don't forget to leave a comment in order to be eligible for the drawing of the book, "Just around the Corner".

Before we get to the book blog hop, I'd just like to take a moment to wish everyone a happy Labor Day!  As a kid growing up in rural Minnesota we were taught it was a time to celebrate and give thanks for the blessings given us over the year: especially a bountiful harvest achieved thru hard work and dedication.  Thank you everyone who has worked hard, at whatever you do, for the betterment of this nation.    May all your harvests be bountiful!!

Let the fun begin!  I was so excited when Darlene from SewCalGal agreed to take part in the virtual book tour for "Just around the Corner".  Not only is she a leader in keeping everyone in the loop on what is going on in the quilting world, but she is your go-to "gal" for anything that has to do with sewing or embroidery.  I've also learned that she is camera shy   :-)

Please hop over to Darlene's blog to read her review of the book and any other tidbits she is sharing!

Don't forget to leave a comment on her post for a chance to win the book and a Clearly Perfect Angles!

There's more fun coming up...check out the schedule here:
